Fluid & Filter Replacement Services

Do you need a filter replacement? Preventative Maintenance is important to keep your vehicles running in good condition. Checking the fluid levels and changing the fluids and replacing the filters can minimize the risk of breaking down and it also helps prolong the life of your engine, cooling system, brakes, and transmission. So it’s very important to pay close attention to your car’s fluids and filters.

Oil Filter and Oil Change

The oil is one of the most important fluids to replace in your engine. It lubricates while also cooling, cleaning, and protecting the engine.  The oil filter keeps contaminants such as dirt, carbon, and metal particles from getting into the engine and causing damage to the bearings, valvetrain, journal, and cylinder surfaces of the engine. In time, the accumulated dirt and debris trapped by the filter can obstruct the oil flow. If the bypass valve is forced open, the unfiltered oil will go to the engine which can cause expensive engine damage.

Changing the oil filter doesn’t get rid of the accumulated moisture, acids, and sludge.  The only way to do that is fluid and filter replacement.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter prevents contaminants from interfering with the operation of the vehicle’s carburetors or fuel injection system. A clean fuel supply is essential for reliable engine operation. Always check your owner’s manual to see the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines are for fuel filter replacement. Sources estimate filters should be replaced from 20,000 up to 40,000 miles or more.

Air Filter Replacement

Air filters keep dirt out of the engine.  So the length of time between getting your air filter changed depends on your environment. The engine air filter should be replaced between 15,000 and 30,000 miles, depending on driving conditions. If you drive on unpaved roads, it needs to be changed more frequently. If you don’t drive a lot, your air filter should be replaced at least every 3 years, because they become brittle with age.

Cabin Filter

The cabin filter cleans the air that enters the passenger area of your vehicle. It prevents pollen, dust, and other pollutants from entering the cabin area.  These filters should usually be replaced every 30,0000 miles unless the vehicle manufacturer recommends otherwise.

Transmission Fluid

For those with automatic transmissions, changing the fluid and filter every 25,000 to 30,000 miles can significantly prolong the life of the transmission.

The antifreeze in coolant performs 3 major functions, it prevents the coolant from freezing, it raises the boiling temperature of the coolant to prevent overheating, and it fights corrosion. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that you change the coolant every 2 to 3 years or 30,000 miles to make sure the corrosion inhibitors in the antifreeze are still effective.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture over time. After 2 or more years, it can become contaminated with moisture. This can lower the boiling point which could contribute to pedal fade if the brakes overheat. Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years for preventative maintenance to prolong the life of the hydraulic components in the brake system.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid is never changed unless there is a hose failure or the steering gear has to be replaced.

The filters in your car or truck should be checked and replaced regularly as they are a part of your vehicle’s normal wear components. The frequency by which you should have your filters and fluids checked and replaced depend on mileage, your driving habits, road conditions, and filter and vehicle types. Symptoms you may experience that will indicate your filters or fluid may need to be replaced will include poor gas mileage, hesitation when accelerating, and unwanted odors inside your automobile.

Preventive Maintenance can minimize the risks of breakdowns and prolong the life of your engine, transmission, cooling system or brakes.  Get your automotive fluids and filters checked today at Trans Tech Auto & Truck in Colorado Springs.
